EMPLOYMENT THROUGH VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Funded by: Functional Vocational Training & Research Society (FVTRS)

Status: Completed ( 2015-2020)

The project titled Demand Driven Employment Through Vocational Skill Development Training was launched by SAK Foundation in 2018 through generous funding by Functional Vocational Training & Research Society (FVTRS), Bangalore, India. Under this project, SAK Foundation has been working towards enhancing employability for the school dropout youth aged between 18-35 years in Surguja District through Vocational Skill Development training.

The organization ensures that the youth from the most marginalized sections of society are brought under the purview of this program. The training aims at developing inherent skills of the youth and equipping them to establish income generation/self-employment units. Through this project, SAK Foundation has inculcated soft skills and entrepreneurial skills amongst its beneficiaries who were the female youth from the tribal communities in and around Surguja. This has subsequently inspired a few participating youths to become successful entrepreneurs. The intervention was from a rights-based approach, assisting women to help them lead a dignified life.

COURSES OFFERED

GODNA TEXTILE

Godna is a traditional body tattooing art form prevalent amongst the tribes of central India. The art form has seen decline in its application in contemporary times and SAK Foundation along with Godna Artists have been working to preserve the art form. Through this program the young tribal women, aged between 18-33, in Ambikapur Block were trained in painting Godna art on textiles. The entire initiative has not only provided women, with an alternate livelihood but has also earned them respect and recognition. Many trained artists have further started their own small initiatives wherein they innovate with Godna and earn livelihood while preserving its cultural significance.

GARMENT MAKING

Women were trained in designing and making garments which also involved teaching the intricacies of tailoring. The trained participants eventually started their own tailoring centers in their households. Through this program, women who were dropped out of education at early age were trained in a skill to help them earn livelihood for themselves and most importantly raise their self esteem. Some of the trained youth also joined shops and workshops focusing on designing garments.

BEAUTICIAN TRAINING

Based on the inclination of the participants, beautician training was another course offered under this program. Women were trained in beautician courses which was relevant from the point of employment too.

HANDICRAFT &
TOY MAKING

The participants who showed interest in handicrafts and toy making were trained by the master trainers. The women who participated in the workshops further went on the entrepreneurial path and formed self help groups which today designs and manufactures toys for several government/private handicraft showrooms.
